Converting Double Garage to large SIngle (removing central pillar)

Do I Need Permission - Ask An Expert Hi,

I’m considering converting my double garage into a large single garage (with electric door). This would involve the removal of the central pillar (and the replacement of the current two lintels with a larger one).

Would this work require planning permission or a building warrant ?

Regards,
Darren

    Hi Darren

Generally it would not need planning permission as long as the new garage door was in keeping with the previous style of garage doors (unless your property is a listed building or in a conversation area)

It will need the benefit of a Building Warrant Approval as the alterations are structural and will require an engineer to design and specify a suitable new lintel to span the increased width.
